Getting started is easier when you can see what you already have and what you still need. Our beginner’s checklist groups equipment into three levels so you can build your kit over time.

The list is a starting point, rather than an exhaustive shopping list. Your coach can help you prioritise purchases for your sessions and events. Wetsuit requirements, for example, depend on where you swim and the event rules. Product photographs in the download are examples; other brands are available.

Essential kit

The checklist’s core equipment covers swimming, cycling, running and recording your training:

  • Swim wetsuit
  • Goggles
  • Road bike
  • Helmet
  • Smart watch, such as Garmin or Coros
  • Heart-rate monitor
  • Running shoes
  • Race belt

Desirable additions

As your training develops, discuss which of these will be useful for your programme:

  • Swim hat
  • Tow buoy
  • Kickboard
  • Swim fins
  • Pull buoy
  • Smart trainer or smart bike
  • Tri suit
  • Gait analysis
  • Bike fit

Optional equipment

These are items to consider later, according to your goals and budget:

  • Swim snorkel
  • Triathlon bike
  • Bike computer

How to use the checklist

Download or print the one-page guide and tick off the equipment you already own. Before buying the rest, review the gaps with your coach. Focus first on safe, suitable equipment that helps you complete your planned training.
