Why does consistency matter more than a hero session?

Build a training routine you can repeat, without being distracted by somebody else's standout workout.

A spectacular session is easy to celebrate. A string of ordinary, well-executed weeks is less visible, but it is often the more useful focus for an athlete building towards a goal.

Our coaching advice is to choose work you can fit into your life and return to consistently. That does not mean every session should feel comfortable. It means the demanding work has a place within a routine you can sustain.

Borrow the principle, not the professional's session

An elite athlete's workout is a small window into a much larger programme. It does not show all their previous training, the purpose of that block or what is planned afterwards.

Instead of copying the numbers, ask what principle interests you. Is it purposeful recovery? Preparation for a particular course? Concentration during an interval? Discuss how that idea might apply to your own programme.

Plan for the week you actually have

Start with the time genuinely available. Include travelling to the pool, setting up equipment and getting ready for work afterwards. A plan that relies on everything going perfectly leaves little room for ordinary life.

FitLogic describes an assessment, prescription, evaluation and prediction cycle. The relevant idea here is that completed training should inform the next decision. It is a useful framework for review, rather than a promise that progress will always be smooth. FitLogic's methodology.

A simple weekly review

  • Which sessions fitted well and served their purpose?
  • Where did the timetable repeatedly break down?
  • What needs to change to make the next week realistic?
  • Are you judging progress over a useful period, rather than one workout?

Missing a session does not create a debt that must be repaid immediately. Discuss how to move forward. A workable next week is more valuable than trying to recover a perfect-looking last week.
